Speak, Poet.: Thoughts on "It Gets Better"
All of this. While I really do love the idea that it’s something that is trying to inspire hope, I have my problems with it. One, being that they have videos from people like Katy Perry and Vinny from the Jersey Shore, both of which are complete bullshit. Katy Perry’s song “Ur So Gay” uses gay as an insult/slur and is, um, just exactly what we don’t want people to do. Vinny from the Jersey Shore is blatantly lying multiple times in his video, saying that they “don’t use slurs on the show” (Hey, anyone remember the show where half the plot was Mike hooking up with a “tranny” and all the blatant transphobia and cissexism and asshole-ness that went with that episode?) Not to mention Vinny graduated from my college and my best friend knows someone personally who was gay bashed by him. So things like this make the entire campaigne seem superficial, and while some amazing celebrities have been a part of it, extended it to people like the above mentioned really takes away from the sincerity. Also, the videos have primarily been made by very priveleged people. After Dan Savage made his first one, I remember someone (I don’t remember who, probably one of my followers so let me know if it was you) saying “Of course it got better for YOU, Dan Savage, you’re a priveleged rich white man” or something like that. I think that covers it.In response to a person who alleged that people who took issue with the campaign “[are not] understanding the point.”
I’m gonna jump in on this one. The idea behind the campaign is noble. Thank goodness someone is saying something. But the way it is being handled is problematic. When you have…

My thoughts on “it gets better” are always better conveyed by the people that Katie West reblogs than by me personally.
